Recent Support

We are excited to announce the beta launch of our new website.
Please take a look and give us your feedback.

During the past academic year, FSCL provided support for the Libraries in the following ways:

Strengthening Library Collections

We help fund special or unusual book purchases. Additionally, we contributed $10,000 to the FSCL Preservation Fund endowment for the conservation of rare and unique materials in the collections.

Improving Library Spaces and Equipment

The Friends Fund helped furnish the East Asian Languages Lounge on Level 4.

The renovation of the Friends of the Libraries Reading Room stands out as a major accomplishment for the Friends. Since the Reading Room’ opened in November 2010, students have enjoyed this comfortable and quiet space.  It has become such a popular space that last fall we purchased a second study table, chairs and additional ottomans.

Supporting Students

Library Orientation is an important first step that helps new students navigate resources and services that can seem overwhelming at first. We encourage attendance by providing a small gift (a flash drive) to all attendees. As a result, Smith has one of the highest attendance rates at library orientation among peer institutions.

We provide students with late night refreshment breaks during reading periods in December and May. I Love My Library Day is held in mid-February with afternoon tea and fun activities for students to enjoy in all four libraries.

In May, we present new books to the Libraries, each one plated in honor of a graduating student library assistant

Supporting Staff

Digital Services Coordinator Sika Berger became the 7th librarian to avail of the FSCL Staff Development Fund when she attended the Association of College and Research Libraries Intentional Teacher Immersion Program last October. She described the program as "really useful," adding that it informs her teaching every day.

Supporting the Greater Smith Community

We underwrite access to JSTOR (a digital archive of academic journals and scholarly resources) for Smith alumnae via the Alumnae Association website.

We support research by providing travel stipends for two doctoral students conducting research in the Libraries' Special Collections.

We host a number of fun and informative events each year. Podcasts are available for those who are not able to attend.
